Chapter 6. Exact Points and Precision Curves > The Great and Powerful Pen Tool

The Great and Powerful Pen Tool

Now that you've had a taste of Bézier theory, it's time for full immersion. The pen tool is the absolute Bézier champ, capable of creating anything from schematic newspaper charts to detailed scenes of heightened reality. For nearly a decade, Illustrator's pen tool was the reigning virtuoso, and no other program offered anything that came close. Now Adobe has taken Illustrator's pen tool and, with a few microscopic exceptions, added it to InDesign. You can also find a more primitive version of the pen tool in Adobe Photoshop. It's a testament to the elegance of the original.

Pen Tool Basics

When drawing with the pen tool, you build a path by creating individual points. Illustrator automatically connects the points with segments. The following list summarizes how you can use the pen tool to build paths in Illustrator. These methods are described in more detail later in this chapter.
