Deselecting Stuff That You Want to Leave As Is

Selecting is your way of telling Illustrator, “This thing is messed up, and now I'm going to fix it.” If you don't want to do something to an object, you need to deselect it.

It's also OK if you say “>unselect,” or even “antiselect” or “get it out of the selection loop,” but I've always found the unremarkable “deselect” easiest.
