Working with Drawing Layers

In addition to the stacking functions, Illustrator offers self-contained drawing layers (or simply layers), an almost essential capability for creating complex illustrations. Illustrator was late to join the layering game—version 5 was the first to offer layers, years behind drawing rivals FreeHand and Canvas—but its layers are quite possibly the best of any drawing program. To display the Layers palette, choose Window » Layers (Figure 8.18).
