Smart Guides

Now that I've sung the praises of guides and grids for all your precision drawing and positioning needs, it's just about time to tell you that Illustrator also has a system of automated guides that might just make those old-fashioned guides and grids obsolete. Smart guides are a trio of context-sensitive helpmeets called alignment guides, path labels, and path highlights. The alignment guides are temporary informational guidelines that pop in and out of existence as you drag the cursor around the screen. Path labels consist of a number of little text hints that appear to inform you where your cursor is within the document. Path highlights ring the outline of a path to tell you that the cursor is positioned over that path.

Smart guides are completely independent of traditional guides, with the exception that their color matches that of traditional guides and is determined in the Guides & Grid Preferences dialog box.
