Painting Paths

The paintbrush tool (fifth tool down on the left side of the toolbox) is the other free-form path creation tool. Like the pencil, the paintbrush follows your mouse movements. When you release the mouse, Illustrator automatically assigns and positions points and segments to the path. So what's the difference between the two tools?

The big difference between the tools is that the paintbrush automatically assigns special types of strokes—called brushes—to the paths it draws. These brushes allow you to create the look of pen and ink, calligraphy, natural media, and even supernatural strokes. Figure 5.26 shows how applying brushes to a simple path can dramatically change the path's appearance.
