Used to be that pixel-based raster images were as useful in Illustrator as a can of Pepsi at a Coca-Cola sales conference. You could look at the raster image but couldn't touch it. Today, it's a different story. Not only does Illustrator allow you to import and manipulate raster images from programs such as Adobe Photoshop, but it also lets you create your own raster effects within Illustrator. You can apply transformations, filters, effects, or transparency techniques to images and even apply raster effects such as drop shadows, glows, and feathers that create raster images without actually losing your original path information.
