Blending Paths

Blending is one of Illustrator's most exotic and oldest capabilities. Back when every one of its competitors offered automated gradations, Illustrator allowed you to design your own custom gradations. Illustrator's blend tool wasn't easy to use, but it yielded an unlimited range of results. There wasn't a single gradation you couldn't create using blends. Unfortunately, blends were much harder to create than gradations. So users were always asking for gradients.

Fortunately, Adobe added gradient fills to Illustrator. In fact, Illustrator offers what is undoubtedly the finest automatic gradient fill function of any drawing program (as discussed in Chapter 15) and a blend tool that's simply unrivaled. Any time you want to go beyond linear and radial gradations, the blend tool is at your beck and call.
