Linked or Embedded

Before I get into the discussion of whether to link or embed images, let's back up and review how you get images into Illustrator in the first place. There are three ways to import raster images into Illustrator.

  • Choose File » Open to open your image as a new Illustrator file. This automatically embeds your image.

  • You can use the Clipboard and drag an image from an application, such as Photoshop, and drop it—kerplunk—onto an Illustrator window. This also automatically embeds your image.

  • You can use the File » Place command to either link or embed your image.
