Chapter 20. Becoming Master of the Raster > Converting Pixels into Vectors

Converting Pixels into Vectors

Despite the lack of a sophisticated auto trace tool, Illustrator does have two commands that can convert pixel images into vector objects. The first is the Object Mosaic filter, which converts pixel information into small rectangles. The other is the Photo Crosshatch, which creates the effect of an old-fashioned custom halftone screen.

Finding the Mosaic in an Image

Imagine you had a large photograph that covered your bathroom floor. If you could apply it, the Object Mosaic filter would carve the photograph up into individual tiles (rectangles) that would create the look of the photograph on the floor. The smaller the rectangles, the more detail in the finished image.
