Chapter 13. Style & Edit Type > Word processing

Word processing

Use the Find/Change command to search for and replace characters.

To find and replace text:

1.
Optional: Click with a type tool to create an insertion point from which to start the search. If you don't do this, the search will begin from the most recently created object.

2.
Choose Type > Find/Change.

3.
Enter a word or phrase to search for in the “Find what” field .

4.
Enter a replacement word or phrase in the “Change to” field . Leave the “Change to” field blank to delete instances of the “Find what” text altogether.

5.
Do any of these optional steps:

Check Whole Word to find the “Find what” letters only if they appear as a complete word—not as part of a larger word (e.g., “go” but not “going”).

Check Case Sensitive to find only those instances that match the exact uppercase/lowercase configuration of the “Find what” text. With this box unchecked, case will be ignored as a criteria.

Check Wrap Around to search the whole file from the current cursor position to the end of the text object or string of linked objects and then continue the search from the most recently created object. With Wrap Around unchecked, the search will proceed only from the current cursor position forward to the end of that text object; you'll have to click Find Next to resume the search.

Check Search Backward to search backward from the current cursor position.

6.
Click Find Next to search for the first instance of the “Find what” word or phrase or to skip over a word .

7.
Click Change to replace only the currently found instance of the “Find what” text.

or

Click Change All to replace all the instances at once .

or

Click Change/Find to replace the current instance and search for the next instance.

8.
Click Done (Return/Enter or Esc).

Beware: The corrected word will take on the styling of the text preceding it and will lose its original styling.
