Chapter 3. Startup > Saving files

Saving files

There are five options for saving a file from Illustrator: Adobe Illustrator document (simply “IllustratorAI” in Windows), Illustrator EPS (EPS), Adobe PDF (PDF), SVG (SVG), and SVG Compressed (SVGZ). These formats can be reopened and edited in Illustrator. If you're going to print your file directly from Illustrator, you can stick with the Adobe Illustrator format (.ai). Also, since this format is based on the PDF format, Adobe Illustrator files can also be opened in other applications that read PDF files.

If you're going to export your file to another application (e.g., a layout application for print or Web output), you'll need to choose one of the other options, as not all applications can read native Illustrator files. Other export formats are discussed on pages 47–52 and pages 454–462. Saving as SVG is discussed on page 504.
