Chapter 28. Separations > Color separation setup

Color separation setup

Trapping and color separations are usually handled by a prepress provider—either a service bureau or a print shop. Talk with your print shop before producing color separations or building traps. They'll tell you what settings to use. Don't guess—this isn't the time to “wing it.”

To print an illustration on press, unless your print shop uses direct-to-plate technology, you need to supply them with or have them produce black-and-white film output (color separations) from your Illustrator file—one sheet per process or spot color. Your print shop will use the film separations to produce plates to use on the press—one plate for each color.
