Chapter 8. Reshape > Slicing and dicing

Slicing and dicing

The Scissors tool can be used either to open a closed path or split an open path into two paths. A path can be split at an anchor point or in the middle of a segment.

To split a path:

1.
Choose any selection tool.

2.
Click on an object to display its points.

Note: You can split a closed path with text inside it (area text), but you can't split an open path that has text on it or inside it.

3.
Choose the Scissors tool (C).

4.
Click on the object's path . If you click once on a closed path, it will turn into a single, open path. If you click in two different spots on a closed path, the object will be split into two open paths. If you click once on an open path, it will split into two paths.

If you click on a segment, two new endpoints will appear, one on top of the other. If you click on an anchor point, a new anchor point will appear on top of the existing one, and it will be selected.
