Chapter 25. Preferences > To create a custom startup file:

To create a custom startup file:

1.
For safekeeping, duplicate the existing startup file, and move the copy to a different folder (see the sidebar).

2.
Double-click either of the two Adobe Illustrator Startup file icons (see sidebar).

3.
Do any of the following :

Create new colors, patterns, or gradients, and add these new items to the Swatches palette. For a visual reminder, apply swatches to separate objects in the file.

Drag-copy swatches from any open swatch libraries to the Swatches palette.

Create custom brushes or new styles, and apply them to objects as a visual reminder.

Choose Document Setup, Page Setup, or Print Setup options.

Choose ruler and page origins.

Choose a document window size and scroll positions or create new view settings.

4.
To help Illustrator launch quickly, delete whatever you don't need in the startup file (e.g., brushes from the Brushes palette).

5.
Save the file in the Plug-ins folder using the same name (as listed in the sidebar).

The startup files

The startup files are stored in the Plug-ins folder in the Adobe Illustrator 10.0 application folder. In the Mac OS, they're called Adobe Illustrator Startup_CMYK and Adobe Illustrator Startup_RGB; in Windows, Adobe Illustrator Startup_CMYK.ai and Adobe Illustrator Startup_RGB.ai.
