Chapter 23. Precision Tools > Ruler and object guides

Ruler and object guides

The rulers are located at the top and left edges of the document window. Location measurements (e.g., the X and Y readouts on the Transform and Info palettes) are read from the ruler origin, which is the point where the zeros of both rulers meet. By default, the ruler origin is positioned at the lower left corner of the page, but it can be moved to a different location in any individual document to help you measure or position objects. The current pointer location is indicated by a mark on each ruler.

To move the ruler origin:

1.
If the rulers aren't displayed, choose View > Show Rulers (Cmd-R/Ctrl-R); or deselect all objects, then Control-click/ Right-click the artboard and choose Show Rulers from the context menu.

2.
Drag the square (where the two rulers intersect) to a new position . The ruler origin will stay in the new location even if you close and reopen the file.

  • If you move the ruler origin, pattern fills in any existing objects may shift position.

Figure 1. To change the ruler origin, drag diagonally away from the intersection of the rulers.
