Sketching

If you enjoy sketching objects “by hand,” you'll gravitate to the Pencil tool, especially if you have a stylus. Pencil paths can be reshaped like any other paths (see Chapter 8). Note: If you need to draw straight lines or smooth curves, you'll go mad trying to do it with the Pencil; use the Line Segment, Arc, or Pen tool instead!

The Pencil tool performs three distinctly different functions. If you drag in an empty area of the artboard with the Pencil, you'll create a new, open path. If you drag along the edge of an existing, selected path (open or closed), the Pencil will reshape the path (see page 123). And if you drag from an endpoint on an existing open path, you will add a new segment to the path (see page 121).
