Chapter 11. Layers > Layer upon layer

Layer upon layer

Until now (unless you snuck ahead to this chapter), you've been creating objects on a single, default layer that was created automatically when you created your document. Each new path you drew was added above the next path in the document's stacking order.

Now it's time to get acquainted with the feature that displays the stacking order—the Layers palette. With a document open, click the Layer 1 arrowhead on the Layers palette to reveal the list of objects on that layer. Layer 1 is called a top-level layer (meaning it's not nested within another layer) .
