Chapter 9. Fill & Stroke > Creating fill patterns

Creating fill patterns

To create a fill pattern:

1.
Draw an object or objects to be used as the pattern . They may not contain a gradient, mask, blend, mesh, pattern, or bitmap image. Simple shapes are least likely to cause a printing error. The objects can contain brush strokes.

Figure 1. Select one or more objects. You can use anything from geometric objects to freehand lines. The simpler, the better.

2.
Strictly optional: Apply Filter > Distort > Roughen or Effect > Distort & Transform > Roughen at a low setting to make the pattern shapes look more hand drawn.

3.
Marquee all the objects with the Selection tool (V).

4.
Choose Edit > Define Pattern.

or

Drag the selection onto the Swatches palette, deselect the objects, then double-click the new swatch.

5.
Type a name in the Swatch Name field.

6.
Click OK .

Figure 3. An object is filled with the pattern from figure .

You can use a rectangle to control the amount of white space around a pattern or to crop parts of the objects that you want to eliminate from a pattern.
