Chapter 9. Fill & Stroke > Using the Swatches palette

Using the Swatches palette

You can control whether the Swatches palette displays all types of swatches or only certain categories of swatches, and whether the swatches are large or small.

To choose swatch display options:

1.
Click a display button at the bottom of the Swatches palette to control which category of swatches is displayed : Show All, for all types (colors, gradients, and patterns); Show Color, for solid colors only; Show Gradient, for gradients only; or Show Pattern, for patterns only.

2.
Choose a view for the currently chosen category of swatches from the palette menu: Small Thumbnail View, Large Thumbnail View, or List View. In List View , the palette also displays an icon for the color's color model.

  • Choose Large Thumbnail View for gradients and patterns.

3.
Choose Sort by Name to sort the swatches alphabetically by name.

or

From the palette menu, choose Sort by Kind to sort swatches into color, then gradient, then pattern groups (use when all the categories of swatches are displayed).

  • To choose a swatch by typing, choose Show Find Field from the palette menu, click in the field, then start typing. A swatch, if found, will become selected. This may not work perfectly in Windows.

  • If you've chosen different views for the different categories of swatches (colors, gradients, and patterns) and you want to force all the categories of swatches to display in the same view, hold down Cmd-Option/Ctrl-Alt as you choose Small Thumbnail View, Large Thumbnail View, or List View from the palette menu.
