Chapter 21. Distort > Envelopes

Envelopes

With version 10, Illustrator has added a powerful envelope distortion feature. First you create a container, called an “envelope,” for one or more objects. Then you distort the envelope shape, and the object within the envelope conforms to that distortion. Envelopes can be created using one of three different commands on the Object > Envelope Distort submenu:

  • By creating a mesh first and then manipulating it (Make with Mesh command).

  • Using a preset, but editable, warp (Make with Warp command).

  • Or by converting a user-drawn path into an envelope (Make with Top Object command).
