Using the symbolism tools

The symbol sprayer tool is one of the symbolism tools. The symbolism tools are used to create and modify instances or sets of symbol instances. Now you'll use the symbol sprayer tool to add more grapes to the illustration. Then you'll use the symbolism tools to modify the size, color, and position of the grapes.

1.
Double-click the symbol sprayer tool () in the toolbox to open the Symbolism Tools Options dialog box.

2.
Enter a diameter of 100 pt and leave the other settings at their default values. Click OK.

3.
Position the symbol sprayer tool over the grape cluster and click and drag around until there are several grapes in the cluster.

Set symbolism tools options.

Spray symbol instances.

Next you'll use the symbol stainer tool to change the colors of the grapes. The symbol stainer tool bases its color changes on the fill color in the Color palette. First you'll sample a color from another grape in the artwork, and then you'll use the symbol stainer tool to change the colors of the grapes in the symbol set you created.

4.
Select the eyedropper tool () in the toolbox and click the large purple grape at the top of the blend. By clicking the grape with the eyedropper tool, you sample its color and that color now appears in the Color palette.

Sampled color is displayed in Color palette.

5.
Select the symbol stainer tool () in the same group of tools as the symbol sprayer () in the toolbox.

6.
With the symbol instance set still selected, click the symbol stainer tool over it a few times until you are satisfied with the color changes.

7.
Select the symbol sizer tool () in the same group of tools as the symbol stainer () in the toolbox.

The symbol sizer tool increases or decreases the size of symbol instances in an existing symbol set.

8.
With the symbol instance set still selected, click the symbol sizer tool over it once to enlarge a few of the grape symbols.

9.
