Basic image editing for both print and Web images

Whether your image will be printed on paper, or appear on a Web page or in another online document, some basic editing steps apply to both media. In this lesson, you will start by cropping and resizing the image and proceed to color and tonal corrections. You will then work on restoring some of the original brushwork detail from the painting that was lost in the scanning process. After completing these basic corrections, you will perform procedures specific to print and Web publishing.

Cropping and resizing

Early in the retouching process, you should crop only the area of the image that you will use, and throw away unneeded data to speed up editing and printing time. For the printed (4-inch by 6-inch) postcard, you will use a crop of the image that is 2 inches by 3 inches at 266 ppi resolution. For the Web image later in this lesson, you will resample down the image even more.
