Specifying layers and exporting the artwork

You have now created all the art you need for your banner in Illustrator. Before exporting the artwork to ImageReady, you will place each art element on its own layer, so that you can keep control over the artwork and work with it easily.

1.
In the Layers palette, create a new layer by clicking the New Layer button in the Layers palette and dragging the layer to the bottom of the list.

2.
Double-click the new layer to open the Layer Options dialog box. Rename the layer Yellow Background, and click OK.

Alt/Option-click the New Layer button at the bottom of the Layers palette to create a new layer and display the Layer Options dialog box in one step.

3.
Using the selection tool, select the yellow rectangle that makes up the background of the banner.

4.
In the Layers palette, to the far right of the Custom Lampshades Logo layer, notice the small square next to the target icon. Drag the small square to the Yellow Background layer, to move the selected artwork to that layer.

You’ll create another two layers and move artwork to them.

5.
Create a layer for the logo’s light:

  • Alt/Option-click the New Layer button at the bottom of the Layers palette to create a new layer. Name it Lamp Light for Logo. Drag the layer to just below the Custom Lampshades Logo layer.

  • In the image, select the shape you created for the logo’s light.

  • In the Layers palette, drag the small square, indicating the selection, to its new layer.

6.
Repeat step 5 to create a new layer for the black background and blend. Name the new layer Black Background. In the image, select the black rectangle and the blend you created. In the Layers palette, drag the small square, indicating the selection, to the Black Background layer.

7.
Adjust the layer order, if necessary, according to the following illustration.

8.
Save your changes. Now you’ll export the file for use in ImageReady.

9.
Choose File > Export. Name the file Banner.psd. For Format, choose Photoshop 5 (PSD), and click Save (Windows) or Export (Mac OS). In the Photoshop Options dialog box, choose RGB for the Color Model and Screen (72 dpi) for Resolution. Select both Anti-Alias and Write Layers. Click OK.
