Optimizing Web-based art

The slicing feature in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe ImageReady lets you divide a file into smaller files that can be optimized independently. A slice is a rectangular area of the image that becomes a cell within a table in the HTML file for the image. Each slice can contain its own color palettes and references, URLs, rollovers, and animation effects. Slices speed download time and increase image quality in images that contain many styles of artwork.

Optimizing JPEG slices

The Splash1.psd image has been saved with slices, which will let you individually optimize the different colored elements in the image. The lotus art and the gradient must be optimized as JPEG slices to preserve the subtle tones and color variation.
