Lesson 5. Advanced Compositing > Combining comp elements

Combining comp elements

To complete your comp, you’ll add the photo from Photoshop that you edited earlier in the lesson. As you’ll see, it’s easy to work between Illustrator and Photoshop to combine or update elements.

In the Layers palette, click the New Layer button to add a layer. You’ll add the edited photo image to this updated layer.

Return to Photoshop. Choose File > Open, and open the Hair1.psd file in the Lessons/Lessons05 folder.

Press Ctrl/Command, and drag the image to the Schoenad.ai file. The drag-and-drop feature lets you copy and move artwork between Photoshop and Illustrator.

Make the Schoenad.ai file active.

In the Layers palette, delete the Photo layer by dragging it to the Trash button. Rename the new layer Photo, and drag it to the bottom of the Layers palette to position it behind the other artwork.

In the artwork, position the image as necessary within the trim marks.

Save your changes.

You can follow this same procedure to replace or update other artwork elements in the comp—for example, you could add a new logo or additional type.

You can also continue to edit the image in Photoshop, and then replace the older version. The 05End file, for example, includes a soft background that was created by selecting the background and applying a foreground-to-transparent linear gradient; the foreground color was sampled from the woman’s hair. In addition, the logo artwork was duplicated and its opacity varied.

As a final step, save a flattened copy of this comp for your client.

In Illustrator, choose Layer > Flatten Artwork to flatten all visible layers. The layers are flattened into one layer named Photo.

Choose File > Save a Copy, and rename the file Schoen_final.ai. For format, choose Adobe Illustrator 9, and click Save. For Compatibility, choose Illustrator 9, and click OK.

Close any open files, and quit Photoshop and Illustrator.

You’ve completed your comp and are ready to show it to the client for approval.
