Exporting continuous-tone and gradient artwork

Continuous-tone artwork and artwork containing gradients are generally saved to the JPEG image file format. Illustrator saves JPEG files using different compressions based on the image quality you specify. The compression option you choose for the image determines how the color information in the artwork is preserved, which affects the size and quality of the image.

Note

Note: Although JPEG is the recommended file format for retaining the quality of continuous-tone artwork, you can also export continuous-tone artwork to PNG-24 format—for example, to use background transparency or background matting with an image. The PNG-24 format uses the same lossless compression method as the PNG-8 format, in which no data is discarded. As a result, the same image in PNG-24 format usually is larger than in JPEG format. Not all browsers support PNG-24 format.
