Modifying the blend

Now you'll modify the shape of the path or spine of the blend using the convert-anchor-point tool.

Select the convert-anchor-point tool ( ) from the same group as the pen tool ( ) in the toolbox.

Select the endpoint of the spine at the center of the blue circle (don't release the mouse button). Drag slowly down until you see two direction lines, and continue dragging down and a little to the left until the path runs parallel to the bottom edge of the bowl.

Repeat step 2 with the endpoint of the spine at the center of the red diamond, but drag up instead of down.

Now you'll adjust the spacing between the center shapes on the blend.

Using the convert-anchor-point tool, select the middle anchor point of the spine (at the center of the green diamond)—don't release the mouse button—and drag to the left to lengthen the direction line and stretch out the spacing between the blend steps.

Tip

A quick way to reshape the blend's path is to wrap it around another path or object. Select the blend, select the other object or path, and then choose Object > Blend > Replace Spine.

You can modify the blend instantly by changing the shape or color of the original objects. Now you'll delete an anchor point on an object and reshape the object to modify the blend.

Zoom in closer on the red diamond by using the zoom tool ( ) or the Navigator palette.

Hold down Ctrl (Windows) or Command (Mac OS), and click the red diamond to select it.

Select the delete-anchor-point tool ( ) from the same group as the convert-direction-point tool in the toolbox and click a corner point on the red diamond to delete it.

Notice how changing the shape of the diamond affects the shape of the intermediate steps in the blend.

Select the direct-selection tool ( ) in the toolbox and drag another anchor point on the diamond out to extend the shape of the corner.

Note
