Chapter 4. Select, Move, and Size

Chapter 4. Select, Move, and Size

In Chapter 3 you learned how to draw simple shapes such as squares and circles. Now it's time to learn how to select, move, copy, clone, and resize them. The tool you will use to do all this is one you've already used, the Pick Tool (Figure 1).

Figure 1. The Pick Tool.

The Pick Tool is used to select objects and also manipulate an object's handles. Handles are the large black squares that appear in a rectangular formation around an object when it is selected by the Pick Tool (Figure 2). They are used to change the overall shape of an object.

Figure 2. Handles appear around an object when it is selected with the Pick Tool. Use handles to horizontally and vertically size an object.

To select an object:

1.
Select the Pick Tool from the Toolbox.

2.
Click on the object. Eight black handles will appear around the object (Figure 3).

To select multiple objects by clicking:

1.
Select the Pick Tool from the Toolbox.

2.
Hold down the Shift key while clicking on the objects you want to select. As you select objects, the handles' rectangular formation will expand to include the objects (Figure 4).

Figure 4. The handles' rectangular formation expands to include each object as it is selected. In this case, the bunny and flowers are selected, whereas the t-rex and crown are not.

To select multiple objects by dragging (marquee select):

1.
Make sure the Pick Tool is selected, then place the pointer arrow to the left of the objects you want to select.

2.
Press the left mouse button down and drag it to select the objects. As you drag, a dashed blue rectangle, or marquee, will appear, indicating the selected area (Figure 5).

3.
Release the mouse button when the marquee encompasses the objects you want to select. The items will be selected as a group with the eight handles appearing in a rectangular formation around the objects (Figure 6).
