Antivirus Solutions: This Won't Hurt a Bit

Computer viruses aren't specifically a network-related issue, but protecting your PCs against the latest virus threats is just as important as any of the other security measures discussed in this chapter. An unprotected PC that is connected to the Internet will almost certainly become infected with a virus sooner or later, and the results can be staggering. In some cases, viruses have been able to wipe out every file on a computer, making the data impossible to recover and the PC useless without many hours of restoration.

Antivirus software helps protect your computers from the effects of computer viruses (and the closely related worms and Trojans). But antivirus software is effective only if it is actually installed on your PC and frequently updated so that new viruses can be detected.
