Understanding Security: You May Not Want It, but You Need It

You likely do a number of things to protect your personal property and security without giving those things very much thought. For example, you probably lock your doors, and you don't leave your car running in the parking lot when you go into the supermarket. Sure, these seem obvious, but that's because you recognize the dangers involved in not taking these precautions. Understanding the threats makes it much easier to visualize the necessary precautions to reduce or prevent those threats.

One problem with security threats to your home network is that it can be hard to understand just what those threats are. After all, have you ever thought, “No one would want to get into my computer because there's nothing for them to steal”? As long as you think like that, you do not understand how real the security problem really is. Consider the following list of just a few reasons why someone might want to gain access to your PCs:
