Adding a Switch, a Router, or an Access Point: The Center of Your Network

Now that your network adapters are installed, you are ready to install the centerpiece of your network. For most home networks, this will be a router—either wired or wireless, depending on your choice of network types. If your network does not share an Internet connection, you might have decided to use a switch or a wireless access point, but that decision will have little impact on what you need to do next.

Your router (or other network centerpiece) has several requirements that affect your choice of its best location. Consider the following points in choosing where you will place your router:
