Chapter 7. WORKING WITH NETWORK OPERATIN... > Working with Microsoft Windows Serve...

Working with Microsoft Windows Server

Microsoft has been in the networking business since the early 1980s, and some of its initial networking efforts, such as NetBEUI and OS/2, were collaborative efforts with IBM. Microsoft LAN Manager was one of Microsoft's first forays into developing an NOS. More important to our discussion of network operating systems is the Server version of Windows. The first version of this NOS, Microsoft Windows NT 3.1, was introduced in 1992. The NT stood for New Technology.

An updated (and more stable) version of this NOS was released by Microsoft in 1994, under the name Microsoft Windows NT Server 3.5. Microsoft quickly followed these early releases of Windows NT Server with Windows NT Server 4.0, which was released in 1996. Windows NT 4.0 gained wide acceptance in corporate America (and the world for that matter), making Microsoft a viable player in the NOS market.
