Working with Groupware Products

In Chapter 1, "Computer Networking Overview," a brief discussion was provided of the communication server. Its purpose is to offer different avenues for user-to-user communication on the network. This type of server provides services such as electronic mail, shared scheduling, and discussion groups (for the posting of messages).

A communication server operates in a true client/server fashion, where client applications are used to communicate with different communication services on the server. The client/server software run on a communication server is often referred to as groupware. Groupware is best described as a suite of client communication software used to communicate with a communication server package.
