Chapter 18. PDAS AND THE NETWORK > PDA Operating Systems

PDA Operating Systems

As I already mentioned at the outset of this chapter, two operating systems—Palm and Windows CE—dominate the handheld computing market. The Palm OS provides a minimalist take on handheld computing and offers a simple interface ideally designed for access with a stylus. Windows CE is a mini-version of Windows and offers the same familiar interface, providing the Windows Start menu and a Windows desktop.

Each of these operating systems provides a basic collection of applications and productivity software, and each provides you with the ability to add additional applications to the device. Let's take a quick look at each of the operating systems and then concentrate on how these devices can be used offline and online in conjunction with a corporate LAN.
