Installing Additional Drivers

For a computer to use a printer, it must have the appropriate printer driver installed. A printer driver is a file that contains information—such as the printer’s hardware specifications and internal language—that allows programs on the computer to communicate with a particular printer. As a result, when you install the appropriate printer drivers, one program can easily communicate with a variety of printers.

On a network, each computer that prints to a shared printer must have the printer driver that is appropriate for its operating system. For example, if you have a Hewlett-Packard printer shared on a network composed of Windows XP and Windows 98 Second Edition computers, you’ll need one driver for the Windows XP computers and another for the Windows 98 Second Edition computers.
