Chapter 6. Sharing Data on the Network > Mapping a Network Drive

Mapping a Network Drive

The My Computer window displays all the disk drives on your computer and any folders that are shared on your computer. This provides a convenient starting point for gaining access to the information stored on your computer.

If you frequently use a folder that’s shared from another computer on the network, you can display that folder in the My Computer window. This is called mapping a network drive. When you map a shared folder, you assign a drive letter to it, such as E or Z, and it appears in the My Computer window as a new drive. Keep in mind that to gain access to a shared folder that is a mapped drive, the computer that is sharing the folder must be turned on and connected to the network.
