Future Standards

In Chapter 3, How Wireless Works, we introduced you to several standards, including 802.11a, 802.11b, Bluetooth, and HomeRF. But there are always more standards coming down the pike, often extending and improving existing ideas. We address here a few almost finished protocols that you will be hearing more about in the future.

NOTE

The point of standards, of course, is to prevent multiple incompatible solutions to the same problem. However, with the rise of the Internet, which grew in large part because it was based on a few important standards, the number of standards has mushroomed, leading one wag to comment, “Standards are important, and it's nice that we have so many of them from which to choose.”
