Why Go Long?

The Maine WISP's case is particularly apt, because it illustrates the two uses of long-range wireless networking in situations where wires simply may not work: connecting to the Internet and extending an existing network.

We've both done some work in establishing long-range Internet connections and extending networks, and we've learned that every individual situation is different. As such, our aim here is to describe what's possible, talk about which hardware is necessary, and put ideas into your head. We don't offer detailed instructions because it's impossible to anticipate what would be required in your particular situation.
