Securing Windows NT Servers

In addition to the steps in Chapter 3, you should make the following changes to secure your NT Server system.

Install Patches and Service Packs

This was covered in Chapter 3 but bears repeating here. On a server system, staying current on your security fixes and service packs is critical. You can subscribe to security mailing lists to help determine which ones are important and which aren’t or use the Windows Update Feature to do the updates. If you are unsure of the importance of this, re-read the NIPC message from Chapter 3, which essentially states that most systems polled were out-of-date—some by as much as a year or more. Compromising these systems would seem trivial to a cracker.
