Chapter 2. General Network Security > Security In-Depth, or Layered Security

Security In-Depth, or Layered Security

Once again let’s jump back into the world of the computer and high tech. What does all the wall talk have to do with computer security? It is a good way to visualize how computer security should be set up. This concept is called layered security or security in-depth, and Figure 2-2 shows how the homestead example maps to a security example. Simply stated, any security measure you can build can eventually be broken or bypassed, so to gain high security you need to have multiple layers. This also ensures that as technology and techniques change and evolve, a new weakness in one area of your security won’t compromise the whole system.
