Chapter 1. Assessing Risk > Is It Worth Protecting?

Is It Worth Protecting?

An often overlooked question in security can be boiled down to “Is it worth the trouble of protecting?” This is a somewhat loaded question. To answer it properly, you need to know what you are protecting, how you would need to protect it, and how difficult or costly the protection would be. We will be getting into much more detail on some of these areas in a short while, but for now let’s concentrate on the benefit of security versus the cost of implementing that security.

First, realize that value is subjective. What is important to me might not be worth anything to someone else. Cost factors are also subjective or relative. A home user might not be able to spend the money to implement a full firewall solution, but luckily, most will never need that amount of protection. I can only provide guidance and suggestions in this book. You will have to assess your cost-to-benefit ratio on each item and make decisions accordingly.
