Mailing Lists

Mailing Lists

A mailing list is pretty much what it sounds like: a list of people who receive e-mail containing information on a chosen topic. The names of individual users are not displayed when the mailing goes out, but each user can mail information to the list, which in turn is forwarded to the rest of the list. There are two types of mailing lists: unmoderated and moderated. An unmoderated list is essentially totally automated, and every message that is submitted ends up in your mailbox. These lists are becoming much rarer because of people sending e-mail ads, jokes, hoaxes, and misinformation to them without any checks or balances. Moderated lists, on the other hand, have a human (or a group of them) to read the messages and determine if they are on topic and should be mailed to the list. As you might guess, this isn’t an easy job on high-volume lists, so sometimes information goes out to a moderated list somewhat more slowly than to unmoderated ones. The benefit is that when you get the information, you know it is on topic and somewhat useful. The quality of the messages sent to moderated lists probably isn’t significantly higher, but the quality of the received messages is very much higher. Most moderated lists have charters they send to you when you subscribe so you know ahead of time what type of content is appropriate for the list.

Following are some of the lists that are available. If you want to read more about lists, check out the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) link at The Security List FAQ: xforce.iss.net/maillists/otherlists.php3.
