Key Technical Terms

SPI— Stateful Packet Inspection is a form of packet filtering that examines both packet headers and packet contents. SPI determines more about the packet than just its source and destination. SPI examines packet contents to ascertain that the stated destination computer has previously requested the current communication. This is to ensure that all communications are initiated by a recipient computer and are from Web sources known and trusted from previous interactions. Stateful packet inspection firewalls close off ports until connection to a specific port is requested by a PC host application. This provides protection from port scanning threats.
