Chapter 9. Wrap-Up > The Future

The Future

We have seen how easy it is to install and operate a SOHO LAN. What will the future bring? Sharing computer resources and Internet access in today's home is as important as everyone in today's home having his or her own PC or PCs. With PCs that can surf the Web dropping in price to around $500, who wants to share his or her PC with anyone? Kids need them for school. We can now use voice-to-text software to control our PCs. In the next several years this will become a standard PC feature. Since such voice recognition works best for individuals, and training of the PC is necessary to have voice recognition work most effectively, everyone will want his or her own non-shared PC. Then sharing information and Internet access via a SOHO LAN becomes necessary for all homes with PCs. Wireless Web cameras can be used to monitor the baby, the bird feeder, the garage, the front door, and more from any household PC.

Along with predicting that every home would have a LAN, I have said as I did in the Introduction to this book that I would have one of the first homes with a LAN connected to the refrigerator. This was a somewhat facetious statement because at the time I felt it would be done, but I was not exactly sure how I would use it. OK, so you do not believe me quite yet. Well, the networked refrigerator exists. There is more than one manufacturer! How do you like them apples? My only wish now is that this book sells enough copies so that I can afford the networked refrigerator. There is no turning back. Anything that you do with a SOHO LAN is critical for your personal and business life. Anything that you learn about PCs, LANs, VoIP, and the Internet is useful to your life today and in the future.
