Summary

This chapter has discussed SOHO LAN security threats including the most common security threat, viruses and malevolent software; spyware observing, collecting, and reporting on user activity; and finally the less common direct attacks by hackers or crackers from the Internet. Countermeasures to mitigate the security threats were examined including virus scanning software, firewalls, and Microsoft Windows update services that fix Windows security vulnerabilities. A brief discussion of administrative procedures for monitoring network PC hosts and servers to detect and report security attacks concluded the chapter. The intent of this chapter is to provide an overview and introduction to inexpensive, common, and reasonably effective security products and procedures. Larger networks would need more sophisticated and more closely monitored security.
