Chapter 15. HomePnP

Chapter 15. HomePnP

In this chapter…

In the early days of home automation, the systems that were been promoted by manufacturers lacked the technical standards needed for uniformity and cost efficiencies. In recent years, a number of efforts have been made to establish a common in-home networking standard. One of these industry efforts has resulted in the development of a specification called "Home Plug and Play," commonly known as HomePnP. The specification provides consumer-electronics manufacturers with a set of clear guidelines for transforming stand-alone products into interactive home entertainment devices. Its main goal is to transform the home control industry from a niche market to a mainstream consumer retail industry with vastly expanded markets. The main features of this standard include:

  • Nonproprietary and open technologies

  • Modular architecture

  • Interoperability across multiple manufacturers

  • "Mix and Match" of PCs and electronic devices

  • Simple implementation

In this chapter we first examine the evolution of the HomePnP specification, then explain the main features of this home networking technology, and then conclude with a description of the main technological components that comprise HomePnP.
