SUMMARY

The first section of this chapter explained in real terms the various options that are currently available for assigning IP addresses to in-home digital appliances. Another important feature of a home network is the mechanism used to connect with a broadband network. Most logon procedures are based on the concept of using the PPP protocol to establish a virtual session. All home networks need to have enough QoS features to allow the prioritization of applications. If, for example, a customer wants fewer delays on video and voice communications, the customer has the option of selecting a QoS, such as a constant bit rate, on which fewer delays are present. In homes where multiple devices want access to the broadband access network, a commonly deployed architecture consists of a gateway server running a special software process. The main benefit of this approach is that it reduces the number of public IP addresses in your home. Because broadband users' computers have constant connection to the Web, analysts fear cable and DSL lines will become an attractive target for hackers or crackers. Consequently, many users of home networks are beginning to invest in security solutions such as firewalls and VPN technologies to keep their home networks safe from attack.
