SUMMARY

Many companies have begun manufacturing products and offering support services for the home networking industry. All home networks are based on the two popular network models found in the corporate IT world—peer-to-peer and client-server systems. ATM is currently the fastest and most efficient protocol that is available to users of home networks. It has the ability to simultaneously transport data, video, and voice at real-time speeds between different rooms within your home. It is a fully scalable communications solution and is suitable for all types of advanced broadband applications. It is, however, a very expensive technology and it will be a long time before we see ATM networks being deployed within the walls of our homes. In the immediate future, we do see ATM being used as a technology that will provide broadband Internet access to users of home networks. TCP/IP will be a fundamental building block in supporting the entertainment services that run on the home networks of the future.
