Chapter 12. Digital Harmony > ABOUT DIGITAL HARMONY

ABOUT DIGITAL HARMONY

Digital Harmony's business model and technology were created from the following observations:

  • Open interoperability standards such as the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) have been shown to stimulate existing markets, seed new businesses, and create price competition, all to the benefit of consumers.

  • New digital technologies such as IEEE 1394 are complicated and difficult to implement in traditionally analog consumer devices.

  • Consumers won't tolerate home entertainment devices that "crash" like computers have been known to do.

  • It is unlikely that independent manufacturers can implement the myriad of IEEE 1394 open standards with exactly the same results.

  • The surefire way to guarantee the consumer success of IEEE 1394 technology is to independently test and verify device operation within a system; testing is necessary to guarantee that devices work in harmony in a home network.
