Chapter 5. GarageBand > Use the “New Track” window to add a new track

Use the “New Track” window to add a new track

1.
From the Track menu, choose “New Track…” or click the plus button beneath the Tracks column.

2.
In the “New Track” window that opens, click the “Real Instrument” button or the “Software Instrument” button (Software Instruments require a lot more processing power).

3.
From the left column, choose an instrument category, then choose an instrument from the right column. If you plan to record a track, choose a “Basic Track” in the “Real Instrument” pane. A “Basic Track” has no effects applied to it, but you can add them later.

4.
Click “Create.” A new track is added to the Timeline.

When you first open GarageBand, a Grand Piano track is automatically added to the Timeline. To delete this default track (or any other track), select it, then press Command Delete.
